Engage. Empower. Embolden

IGNITE Youth Empowerment Initiative was founded by Obuobia Darko-Opoku in 2022 in response to the need to develop a mentorship programme targeting young Ghanaian women, focusing on building a great networking opportunity for them.

The Initiative managed under the Obuobia Foundation, seeks to ENGAGE young women, EMPOWER them with the requisite all-round skills and EMBOLDEN them to go out there and bring about change within their communities.

Our goal is to build that critical cadre of young women who will lead change, build communities, and champion progress in all sectors of their life.

“It is my firm belief that, with the right mentorship programmes, we can fuel the birth of a new revolution of young women, harnessing their energies and potentials for the needed socio-economic transformation that relies on their untapped capacities, talents and aspirations”, says Ignite Founder Obuobia Darko-Opoku.

CORE ACTIVITIES
Book Reading Sessions: We read a book at a time, and the beauty of this exercise is the opportunity it provides our mentees to acquire non-academic knowledge, learn new things and ideas, and relate their personal experiences and learning.

Mentees and their team leaders have a daily virtual book review session at 7.00 pm, during which there is a discussion of the book, one chapter at a time. This is a compulsory session for all, and it helps to understand better what has been read and situate the learnings within the experiences and aspirations of mentees.

Under the Tree Sessions: This is an in-person focus group-style discussion of a recommended book. Organised in partnership with WoezorTV, this involves a broader review and sharing of learning experiences by mentees, with the occasional involvement of resource persons or authors.

During the Session, resource persons also give presentations on carefully selected issues and subjects, Q&As, and Mentor’s Time with Obuobia.

Campus Mentorship Forum: This is a quarterly programme we plan to rotate across the country, and hosted by a tertiary, or where necessary, a second cycle institution.

The maiden and second Ignite Mentorship Forums occurred at the Universal of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast campuses.

Our following Forum will be in June 2023 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
